Time is precious in our busy lives. Whether you’re commuting on a train, trapped in traffic, waiting to board that plane or simply taking some much-needed downtime, podcasts are great for their anytime-anywhere versatility. Even at the end of a long day, a podcast can be just what you need to start tomorrow re-inspired. Here’s our Smarter round-up of business podcasts from Australia and across the world that are worth checking out.

Lady Startup

Hosted by Australian television presenter Rachel Corbett and produced by Mamamia, Lady Startup features Rachel sitting down to chat with successful women in business. The stories cover everything: from those product idea ‘light-bulb moments’, to the highs and lows of running a business, to amazing stories like that of Diem Fuggersberger, who went from debt and homelessness to starting up two thriving food businesses. Another recent episode features MyBudget founder and Australian entrepreneurial icon Tammy Barton. If you’re dreaming of business success, whatever that means for you, listen to Lady Startup.

TED Talks Business

TED Talks needs no introduction, but you may not be aware of the dedicated channel called TED Talks Business. As insightful as you’d expect from the TED team, TED Talks Business brings together all the innovators, entrepreneurs and researchers from across the business world who have shared the stage at TED conferences and TEDx events. The series covers big-picture topics like industry-wide changes but is also essential listening for self-development topics like building confidence, asking for help and measuring adaptability. Small Business Big Marketing

Tim Reid has worked in marketing his entire working life. Along the way he had an epiphany about how he can apply big marketing ideas to small Australian business. The result is his own consultancy business – The Ideas Guy – and his podcast Small Business Big Marketing. Episodes feature interviews with unique Australian businesses, practical tips and listener questions. Hear Tim’s podcast here.

Is your business born from your creativity? Could a creative solution solve a business challenge for you? Maybe you’re on the cusp of launching your creative pursuit into business or simply looking for artistic inspiration for your day-to-day. Hosted by textile designer Esther Sandler and illustrator and designer Penny Min Ferguson, Wowee!, based in Melbourne, dives deeply into conversations with other creatives. While some might be making art for art’s sake, inspiration’s aplenty, and many of Esther and Penny’s guests have turned their artful passions into livelihoods and viable businesses. Find out how they do it on Wowee!.

This American Life is about as famous as it gets in the world of podcasts. Here with StartUp, one of the producers of that seminal American podcast turns his attention to business – and it is meta. StartUp is a documentary series that follows Alex Blumberg (of This American Life and also Planet Money) on his journey of creating not just any old business, but a podcast business. Yes, it’s a podcast about starting a podcast business. StartUp manages to capture the personal, human element of getting a venture up and running in a sincere, honest way. From choosing a business name to finding investors, failing at pitches and getting feedback from his wife on his business outfits (“Honey, those sneakers will not do”), Alex has made a podcast that is not only entertaining but also full of honest insights. Listen here.

The Hospopreneurs

If you’re in the hospitality game, The Hospopreneurs is the podcast for you. But if you’re not a budding restaurateur or cafe owner, it’s handy to know that the ingredients here aren’t fundamentally foodie. Think of this as a podcast about getting a business up and running but through a hospitality lens – the lessons can apply to anyone. Take one example: Natalie Migliarini started an Instagram account that showcased the vibrant culture of mixology and has gone on to run a business consulting on social media. Stories cover innovation, technology, business failure and learning from it – and so much more. Explore The Hospopreneurs here.

Tradies in Business

Like The Hospopreneurs, Tradies in Business is a niche podcast aimed directly at tradespeople running their own small operation. Whether you’re solo or heading up a small team, this podcast explores marketing (including DIY SEO), sales, business planning, branding and so much more. It’s perfect fodder to listen to on the commute between jobs – and much like The Hospopreneurs, it may seem niche but it’s useful for almost anyone, not just tradies. Listen to Tradies in Business here or look it up in your podcast app of choice.
