Every year, a team of judges drawn from a wide variety of roles and fields are given the difficult task of reviewing and short listing a growing pile of entries for the Telstra Business Awards.

Hundreds of businesses submitted entries for the 2017 Telstra Business Awards. Each entry can take up to 30 hours to complete, providing a detailed snapshot of the business and covering everything from sales and marketing to planning and financial performance.

The judging process has evolved over the 25-year history of the awards to give each entry the attention and consideration it deserves while singling out those which deserve to move on to the next stage.

Paul Greenberg of NORA (The National Online Retailers Association) and a Telstra Business Awards judge believes the best entries “seem to be pushing the boundaries of their verticals.”

“In many ways, a lot of them are rule breakers in the best possible way, they are challenging the status quo and they are challenging taking or granted assumptions.”

“It’s always about the story and the passion behind it,” says biomedical engineer and inventor Dr. Jordan Nguyen. “What drives them? What vision and what values does the business have? I think that’s what sets businesses apart.”

“I’d say what we look for is just a lot of heart and passion in what the business does, and why it exists.”

Pamela Brook, co-founder of Brookfarm and winner of Telstra Australian Business of the Year 2007, is also now on the judging panel. “Every year there’s a different area of innovation. In the past it’s been IT, security, fashion, and (in 2017) it’s aged care. You don’t know what the next thing is going to be, but it’s going to make a difference to the world in some way. It’s going to make a difference to my life and other people’s lives.”

“My advice would be to enter”, encourages Greenberg. “The entry process is almost as rich as being nominated as a finalist or even a winner. A lot of the candidates and the nominees have told me that the process has been very helpful in their businesses, providing clarity to their mission and their strategy. And it’s obviously a wonderful networking opportunity as well.”
